Overview

      In April, 2012, Peking University School of Nursing founded the second Evidence-based Healthcare Excellence Center of Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) in mainland China. In order to fully integrate strength of research and practice, and nursing and related disciplines, Peking University Health Science Center for Evidence-based Nursing was established in November, 2017 after restructuring. Comprising PKU School of Nursing and Peking University First Hospital, Peking University People’s Hospital and Peking University Third Hospital, the Center is a multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral collaborative center. It aims to develop a platform for collaborative research, talents cultivation, international and domestic cooperation and exchange for researchers and practitioners in the field of evidence-based nursing, promote excellence of Nursing discipline of PKU and play a leading role in the field of evidence-based nursing.

Research fields and interests

1. Evidence synthesis research

      With a multidisciplinary research team, we select important issues in nursing practice, and conduct synthesis studies on diversified evidences. Meanwhile, we work on cultivation of evidence synthesis talents, and provide a solid evidence body for policy formulation and clinical decision-making.

2. Evidence translation research

      Based on best evidence, we collaborate with government departments and professional associations to fully benefit from the think tank and technical support of methodological experts. As a result, we can play a leading role in development of care standards, norms, expert consensus and clinical practice guidelines at national and professional levels. We make great efforts to promote the progress of knowledge-to-action.

3. Evidence transfer and implementation research

      In order to achieve knowledge-to-action and reduce the knowledge-to-practice gap, we organically combine strengths of researchers, practitioners and administrators to integrate best evidence into information platform, workflow, norms, manuals and training materials; select clinical bases and nurture talents to carry out evidence implementation studies.

Capabilities

      The research team consists of multidisciplinary experts from PKU School of Nursing and affiliated hospitals, with three general hospitals and two specialist hospitals as our clinical bases. The core members have been trained in research methodology and evidence synthesis methodology, and two of them received the JBI Trainer Certificate in 2012. The core members hold major positions in professional societies/associations, including four chairpersons, eight vice chairpersons and one academician of the American Academy of Sciences. The academic committee of the Center is composed of domestic and foreign experts in the field of evidence-based health care, as well as experts who have important influence in the country and different disciplines, such as the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the National and Beijing Nursing Quality Management and Control Centers, Chinese Nursing Association, Beijing Nursing Association, and Chinese Journal of Nursing. Therefore, it greatly facilitates the development of norms, standards and clinical practice guidelines at national and professional levels, as well as the effects of expert think tank. The research team has in-depth collaboration with evidence-based health care centres and research-oriented universities in the United States, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region and can meet the international standards in the research methodology and curriculum design. We have built up a mature continuing education course system in the field of evidence synthesis methodology, edited textbooks for graduate students and undergraduate students in the field of evidence-based practice. In addition, we have held 12 evidence synthesis methodology workshops and more than 20 research methodology workshops for continuing education programs, and have trained key personnel from over 20 provinces and cities in China. Knowledge Translation International Forum: Bridge from Evidence to Practice held in 2017 has drawn wide attention in China and other regions of the Asia Pacific region. We have cooperated with professional societies to publish more than 10 guidelines and expert consensus and come into cooperation with government departments and professional societies.

Major research achievements

      The research team actively carry out research cooperation with domestic and foreign universities and other institutions. We have received financial support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Beijing, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, Capital’s Funds for Health Improvement and Research, Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, Beijing Municipal Administration of Hospitals, professional societies & associations. In addition, we have received funds for international cooperation programs from China Medical Board (CMB), United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and Save the Children International. In the past three years, the center has been working on 8 international collaborative research projects and 28 domestic research projects. Among them, 5 research projects related to guideline development have played important roles of expert think tank in the development of professional standards and expert consensus. In the past three years, the research team has published nearly 200 papers in core journals, including 30 SCI journals. The team members as the principal investigators of projects have won Scientific and Technological Achievements Awards from the Chinese Nursing Association and the Beijing Nursing Association.
